A new report by Transparency International Uganda has indicated that Uganda is not making progress in its fight against corruption.
Addressing journalists on Tuesday, officials from Transparency International said the study which ranked 180 countries indicated that most of these countries including Uganda have made little or no progress in tackling public sector corruption .
This has seen the country study score 26 out of 100 but also rank 141st out of 180 countries ranked.
The latest global corruption index report indicated that with a stagnant score of 26%, below the 43% global average.
“We note that corruption will continue to thrive until justice systems can punish wrongdoing and keep governments in check. When justice is bought or politically interfered with, it is the people who suffer .It is time to end impunity for corruption. Leaders should fully invest and guarantee the independence of institutions that uphold the law and tackle corruption,” Peter Wandera, the Transparency International Uganda Executive Director said.
In the East African region, Somalia has scored worst at 11% followed by South Sudan at 13% and Democratic Republic of Congo tied with Burundi at 20%.
On the other side, Rwanda scored the best within the region with 53%, Tanzania at 40%, Kenya t 31%, Uganda at 26%.
The report mainly bases on failure by the judiciaries and law enforcement agencies of the ranked countries to curb corruption but also the role of political interference in the fight against corruption.
