Uganda’s High Commissioner to India, Prof. Joyce Kakuramatsi Kikafunda, has officially presented her credentials as Uganda’s new Non-Resident High Commissioner to Bangladesh.
In a ceremony held at the Bangabhaban, the official residence of the President of Bangladesh in Dhaka, Prof. Kikafunda presented her Letter of Credence to Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin.
The event included an inspection of a Guard of Honour by the Special Security Force Regiment of the Bangladesh Army, followed by a one-on-one meeting with the president.
President Shahabuddin warmly welcomed Prof. Kikafunda and emphasized the importance of maintaining high-level exchanges to strengthen bilateral ties between Uganda and Bangladesh.
He highlighted key areas of cooperation, including agriculture, defence, foreign affairs, and visa waivers for holders of diplomatic, official, and service passports.
Prof. Kikafunda expressed her commitment to deepening Uganda-Bangladesh relations and extended an invitation for Bangladeshi investment in Uganda’s agro-industry, particularly in the cotton value chain to boost Bangladesh’s textile sector.
She also encouraged investments in pharmaceuticals, ICT, and education, calling for shared knowledge and best practices in these sectors.
Later, Prof. Kikafunda met with Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain.
The two discussed enhancing cooperation in agriculture, with a focus on contract farming, and explored ways to promote bilateral trade through agreements on double taxation avoidance and investment protection. Both sides also agreed to facilitate trade delegations to strengthen economic ties.
The meeting further touched on the potential for Bangladesh’s pharmaceutical industry to supply affordable, high-quality products to Uganda.
