The Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has ordered the arrest of two senior Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officers, in a move that underscores a continued crackdown on alleged misconduct within the military.
Those arrested include Gen Don Nabaasa, who currently serves as Joint Staff for Policy and Strategy. Gen Nabaasa previously commanded the UPDF Third Division in Moroto and also served as the UPDF Contingent Commander in Somalia. Earlier in his career, he held the influential role of Special Forces Commander.
Also detained is Brig Johnson Namanya, who until recently was the Commissioner of Citizenship and Passport Management at the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control. Brig Namanya had been recalled to the UPDF Defence Headquarters last month for reassignment.
The reasons behind the arrests remain unclear, and no official statement has yet been issued detailing the charges or circumstances surrounding the detentions.
Efforts to obtain a comment from the acting UPDF spokesperson, Col Chris Magezi, were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
However source says the duo is detained at Kasenyi , a facility for the Special Forces Command.
Since assuming office, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has initiated a series of actions aimed at addressing corruption and alleged abuse of office within the UPDF, resulting in multiple high-profile arrests of military personnel.
