Police in Mbarara District are investigating a shocking case of murder after the body of 25-year-old Rita Akakunda was discovered in Bwizibwera cell, Rutooma Town Council.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Akakunda’s murder was orchestrated by her sister-in-law, Winnie Kembabazi ,30, who allegedly hired a casual worker to carry out the crime.
The suspect, 19-year-old Byamukama Javira Mawuruba, reportedly confessed to killing Rita after being promised payment by Kembabazi.
The gruesome plot came to light after veterinary doctor Brighton Karegyeya alerted authorities upon discovering the body.
A team of officers responded promptly and processed the crime scene. They deployed a police dog named Honey, which led investigators to Namutebi Jolly’s home. There, they found blood-stained clothes belonging to Byamukama.
When questioned, Byamukama reportedly admitted to the crime, claiming that Kembabazi had instructed and paid him to murder her sister-in-law due to ongoing personal disagreements.
Both suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue. Police have vowed to pursue justice for Rita and hold all those involved accountable.
