At least 14 people have been killed in a horrific road crash involving a taxi and a Sinotruk at Lwera Swamp along the Kampala–Masaka Highway in Kalungu District.
According to the Greater Masaka Regional Police spokesperson, Twaha Kasirye, the fatal accident occurred at around 11:00 p.m. on Monday, August 3, 2026, at Kamunga Trading Centre in Lwera Swamp.
Kasirye said the crash involved a Toyota Hiace taxi, registration number UA 662AQ, and a Sinotruk, registration number UBS 040F, which was transporting sand.
“Fourteen people died on the spot, all of them occupants of the taxi. Four other victims—two from each vehicle—sustained injuries and were rushed to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for treatment,” Kasirye said.
Police officers visited and documented the scene as investigations into the cause of the crash got underway.
Kasirye added that the driver of the truck fled the scene shortly after the collision, and police have launched a manhunt to trace and arrest him.
“Efforts to trace the fleeing driver are ongoing,” he said.
The identities of the deceased had not yet been released by press time as authorities worked to notify their next of kin.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
