Eighty-four suspects linked to the recent deadly attacks in Kasese, Bundibugyo, Ntoroko and surrounding parts of the Rwenzori region have been remanded to Mubuku Government Prison after appearing before the Kasese Magistrate’s Court.

The suspects were presented before Chief Magistrate George Mfituninda under heavy security, with police and prison officers maintaining strict control around the court premises due to the gravity of the allegations.

During the session, prosecution outlined a wide range of charges stemming from coordinated assaults on security installations in Kasese, Fort Portal, Bundibugyo, Kabarole and Bunyangabu districts—incidents that left security personnel injured and several facilities damaged.

The charges read included treason, terrorism, murder, attempted murder, aggravated robbery and financing terrorism.

Prosecution noted that the attacks were meticulously planned and executed across multiple locations, prompting a large-scale security response.

Because the offences are capital in nature, the Chief Magistrate explained that the matter falls outside the jurisdiction of the magistrate’s court and would be forwarded to the High Court, where such cases are legally handled.

After the brief appearance, the suspects—handcuffed and escorted in pairs—were led out of the courtroom and loaded onto prison buses bound for Mubuku Government Prison.

They will remain on remand until December 23, 2025, when the case is expected to return to court for further proceedings.

The attacks

The November 1 attacks occurred at around 5:00 a.m. simultaneously and targeted both military and police installations in Bundibugyo and Kasese districts.

A separate group attempted to raid two educational institutions in Fort Portal City, all within proximity to the Uganda–DR Congo border.

In Bundibugyo , armed militants attacked the Malindi and Kakuka UPDF detachments. In Kasese, the Rwenzori East Central Police Barracks was assaulted, leaving one police officer injured and a small police structure set ablaze.

In Fort Portal North City Division, the assailants allegedly attempted to raid Canon Apollo Core Primary Teachers College and Nyakasura Senior Secondary School, prompting swift security response.
