Voters petition NRM EC to disqualify Bulambuli MP aspirant over forged academic documents

A group of concerned voters from Bulambuli District has petitioned the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission seeking the nullification of Alex Burundo’s nomination as a parliamentary aspirant, citing allegations of forged academic credentials.

The petition, filed through Kiprotich & Co. Advocates, accuses Burundo—currently vying for the NRM flag in Bulambuli County—of lacking the minimum academic qualifications required under Ugandan electoral laws to contest for a seat in Parliament.

According to the petitioners, Burundo served as Local Council III Chairperson for Bukhalu Sub-County in Bulambuli District between 2001 and 2016, during which time he was known officially as Burundo Alex. They claim he was elected and remunerated under that name in all three terms.

However, the petitioners allege that in 2015, Burundo swore a deed poll and adopted the name Burundo Musingo Mungoma Alex, a move they claim was aimed at fraudulently aligning himself with academic documents belonging to a different individual—one Musingo Alex. They argue that this name change was a deliberate attempt to meet the academic qualifications required for nomination to Parliament.

“He denounced his actual name Burundo Alex in order to use the academic certificates for UCE and UACE belonging to Musingo Alex, in order to qualify for nomination,” the petition states. “He further swore a statutory declaration to facilitate this impersonation and was then nominated on the strength of those documents.”

The group also questions the authenticity of Burundo’s reported Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) records. They claim he listed Wahanwanyi Primary School as the institution where he sat for PLE between 1982 and 1988. However, the petition alleges that the school did not have a registered UNEB examination center during that period and that no student sat for national exams there at the time.

Witnesses, including former teachers and classmates, are reportedly prepared to testify that Burundo never used the name Musingo Alex during his school years and did not attend the secondary schools he claims—Mbale Secondary School and Aggrey Memorial School.

They say  Burundo Musingo Mungoma Alex who is actually called Burundo Alex is not and has never been a holder of the said academic documents and is misrepresenting himself as such.

“The said Burundo Musingo Mugoma Alex purported to have denounced the use of his alleged previous name (Musingo Alex) under deed poll and therefore ceased to be known by those names.  Available records show that he has never been known by those names but by the names Burundo Alex.”

They say with these discrepancies, Burundo is  not truthful and makes lies on oath thus is guilty for the offence of personation and utterance of false documents.
