Government  has handed over 30 brand-new vehicles to 15 cultural  leaders from across the country.

The official handover ceremony, held at Kololo Independence Grounds, was presided over by Vice President Jessica Alupo, who delivered a powerful message underscoring the government’s recognition of cultural institutions as crucial partners in national development.

The vehicles were provided under the Traditional Leaders Enhancement Programme, launched by the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, as part of a broader initiative to support the operations of cultural institutions and facilitate outreach to communities.

“These vehicles are not just a gesture of goodwill they are tools of empowerment to help our cultural leaders connect better with their people and continue preserving our heritage,” said Vice President Alupo, addressing the gathering.

Each of the 15 traditional leaders received two vehicles, a move aimed at easing transportation challenges, improving coordination, and fostering stronger ties between cultural institutions and the communities they serve.

Vice President Alupo praised the pivotal role cultural leaders play in preserving Uganda’s rich heritage, promoting social cohesion, and advancing development programmes, especially at the grassroots level.

“Cultural leaders are custodians of peace, unity, and identity. We urge you to continue being agents of transformation in your communities and to support government initiatives, particularly as we head toward the 2026 elections,” Alupo said.

Reading a message from President  Museveni, Alupo reiterated the  deep respect for cultural institutions, describing their restoration as a deliberate effort to honor Uganda’s ancestral wisdom.

“Our ancestors united clans into great kingdoms like Buganda, Bunyoro, and Ankole, reducing conflict and laying the foundation for stability. Their foresight remains critical to the peace we enjoy today,” the president’s message read.

President Museveni also acknowledged the vital role of cultural leaders in preserving languages, customs, and traditions, which he said form the backbone of Uganda’s national identity.

He reaffirmed government’s commitment to protecting cultural heritage sites and promoting cultural tourism as a key part of its development strategy.

The president further applauded cultural institutions for their contributions to education, healthcare, and economic empowerment, particularly through the mobilisation of communities to embrace government wealth creation initiatives such as the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Emyooga.

The vehicles are expected to greatly enhance the leaders’ ability to mobilise, educate, and support their subjects, especially in remote areas, while also promoting unity and participation in development programmes.

Alupo urged  the recipients  continue being symbols of unity and development in Uganda.

“We believe these vehicles will help you reach your people more efficiently, inspire action, and contribute meaningfully to Uganda’s growth story,” she said.
