Questions are swirling around Entebbe Division Police after an American national died in their custody under unclear circumstances, just hours after his arrest.
The deceased, identified as Eric Nkusi, an American citizen of Burundian origin, was detained on the night of August 1, 2025, for allegedly overstaying his visa. He was locked up at Entebbe Police Station, where he died before dawn.
According to multiple sources, Nkusi reportedly a suspected drug user began experiencing severe health complications during the night. Witness accounts suggest he pleaded with officers on duty to provide him with heroin, warning that without it, he would die.
Officers are now pointing fingers at each other over possible negligence, with insiders describing the station as “tense” since the incident.
His body has since been transferred to the City Mortuary at Mulago for a postmortem examination, with arrangements underway to repatriate it for burial.
Police are yet to release an official statement on the incident or comment on what could have caused his death in custody.
