The final day of presidential nominations at the Electoral Commission’s new headquarters in Lubowa will see three key opposition figures officially join the 2025 presidential race.
National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) leader Mugisha Muntu, and Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Nathan Nandala Mafabi are all scheduled for nomination today.
The nomination process commenced on Tuesday, 23rd September, with incumbent President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) being duly nominated.
He was accompanied by Robert Kasibante of the Uganda Peasants Party and Joseph Mabirizi of the Conservative Party.
According to the Electoral Commission, Bobi Wine is expected to arrive for his nomination at exactly 2:00 PM. Following his nomination, he has organized a rally in Nateete, after police approved the location following the cancellation of his earlier planned venue in Katwe.
Nandala Mafabi is also set to address his supporters at the Kampala Road Playground in Butabika shortly after his nomination.
By press time, other aspiring presidential candidates had not yet been cleared for nomination.
To qualify for nomination, all presidential aspirants must satisfy constitutional and legal criteria, including: Being a Ugandan citizen by birth, Being 18 years of age or older, Being a registered voter, Submitting certified academic documents, showing completion of at least Advanced Level (A’Level) or its equivalent, Paying a non-refundable nomination fee of shs20 million, Submitting a completed nomination form, Declaring their candidacy and presenting three passport-sized photographs, Providing proof of voter registration for both the candidate and their nominators, Presenting a unique campaign symbol, Appointing an official campaign agent, Securing endorsements from at least 100 registered voters in no fewer than 98 districts — two-thirds of all districts or cities in Uganda.
Upon successful nomination, candidates will be issued official campaign vehicles, assigned police escorts, and granted permission to briefly address their supporters before departing the nomination venue.
Access to the nomination grounds is strictly controlled. Each aspirant is allowed a delegation of no more than 20 accredited individuals. The names of all delegates must be submitted to the Electoral Commission in advance.
Transportation to the venue is limited to two vehicles per candidate, each carrying a maximum of 10 occupants. All vehicles must display official police-issued stickers for access.
