Security agencies in Kampala have intensified crackdowns on criminal elements across the metropolitan area, arresting at least 72 suspects in a series of intelligence-led operations targeting narcotics, robberies, and public disorder.
According to Police, the coordinated operations were conducted between October 29 and 31 in several divisions, including Nansana, Nakawa, and Old Kampala, following persistent reports of drug abuse and related criminal activities.
On October 30, security personnel raided areas under Wamala Police Post in Nansana Division at around 2:00am, where eight suspects were apprehended from Wamala Kasumba, Karanzi, Kinyarwanda, and Tabba.
The suspects were reportedly found in possession of substances believed to be narcotics and are now awaiting prosecution.
The following night, on October 31 between 12:30am and 4:00am, another operation in Thailand, Katogo, and Kago zones of Kinawataka, Mbuya Parish Nakawa Division led to the arrest of 16 additional suspects from what police described as known criminal hideouts.
Meanwhile, two major sweeps in Old Kampala Division specifically in Nakulabye and Kisenyi each yielded 24 arrests, making a total of 48 suspects from that area alone. Police say they recovered suspected narcotics and dangerous weapons during the raids.
All suspects are being screened and will be produced in court once investigations conclude.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed the crackdown, saying the efforts are part of an ongoing strategy to dismantle criminal networks and enhance public safety.
“The Police in Kampala Metropolitan Area have continued conducting intelligence-led disruptive operations aimed at combating criminality and restoring public order in known black spots. These operations are designed to dismantle criminal networks engaged in narcotic abuse, robberies, and other unlawful activities,”Owoyesigyire said.
Beyond enforcement, police say they are boosting preventive strategies, including community engagement campaigns aimed at strengthening neighborhood watch and promoting vigilance ahead of the election season.
On October 29, police officers held a community policing session in Bulabira Kalitunsi, Najjera, where residents were sensitized on crime prevention, domestic violence, and electoral-related offences.
Owoyesigyire commended public cooperation so far, urging residents to continue sharing intelligence with security forces.
“The public is encouraged to remain alert, share credible intelligence, and work closely with Police to ensure continued peace and security.,” he added.
The intensified operations come amid renewed efforts by security forces to curb rising concerns over urban crime and drug-related incidents in Kampala and surrounding areas.
