The Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has ordered the release of Brigadier General Johnson Namanya from detention after what officials described as an amicable and constructive meeting.
The development was confirmed by the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) Acting Director of Defence Public Information, Chris Magezi.
“The Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has today released Brig Gen Johnson Namanya from detention after an amicable and friendly meeting in which he was cleared of all allegations levelled against him,” Magezi said.
Following his release, Brig Gen Namanya is expected to immediately resume his military duties.
“Brig Gen Namanya will return to his responsibilities accordingly,” Magezi added.
Namanya had been arrested last Friday alongside Brigadier General Don Nabaasa, the Joint Staff for Policy and Strategy. However, authorities have yet to disclose the reasons for their arrest or the circumstances surrounding their detention.
The incident has raised questions regarding the handling of senior military officers, particularly in cases where no official charges are publicly communicated.
