Campaigns for Uganda’s 2026 parliamentary and local government elections have officially began today, Monday.
According to the Electoral Commission (EC), a total of 2,025 candidates are contesting the 353 directly-elected MP seats.
Another 640 candidates are vying for 146 District and City Woman Representative posts, while 521 aspirants are contesting 146 City/District Chairperson positions.
Overall, 83,597 candidates are competing for 45,505 elective positions in the 2026 General Election, ranging from president to Sub-county Councillor.
According to the deputy Electoral Commission spokesperson, Paul Bukenya, there is need for strict adherence to established election guidelines.
“We are calling on all political parties, independent candidates, their agents, supporters, and the general public to follow the campaign guidelines issued for this period,” Bukenya said.
Candidates are required to hold meetings within harmonized schedules approved by returning officers in each electoral area. Campaign rallies are only permitted between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
“We urge candidates and their supporters to ensure all campaign activities end by 6 p.m. to maintain order,” Bukenya added.
EC said security agencies will be briefed on all approved programs to ensure safe and peaceful conduct during campaigns.
The commission also cautioned against inflammatory language, incitement, and defamatory remarks that could provoke public disorder or violence.
“We call on all candidates and their agents to campaign responsibly, without resorting to threats, hatred, or actions that could destabilize public peace,” Bukenya noted.
