Bouncers in Mbale City are redefining their image, evolving from night-time security personnel into community entrepreneurs thanks to a Shs 20 million gym equipment grant from the government through the Microfinance Support Centre (MSC).
The Mbale United Bouncers Association (MUBA) received two treadmills and two commercial spinning bikes, which members will use to maintain fitness while offering the facilities to the wider community for paid access.
Francis Elwoku, MSC Regional Manager for Eastern Uganda, urged responsible use of the grant, emphasizing discipline, accountability, and teamwork. “Support your leadership, save what you earn, and ensure transparency. Continued support depends on proper management,” he said.
Umar Bulega, President of the Uganda National Bouncers Federation, highlighted the grant’s role in professionalizing the sector, stating it empowers bouncers to be disciplined, professional, and community-focused.
Latif Magomu, MUBA President, noted that the equipment will boost the association’s income and community impact. Hudu Hussein, Mbale City MP aspirant, encouraged bouncers to see the gym as a platform for income diversification and entrepreneurship.
Deputy RCC Yahaya Were urged members to embrace business opportunities, create wealth, and engage the community beyond their primary duties.
The initiative is part of a broader government effort to uplift informal sector workers, break stereotypes, and empower youth to contribute meaningfully to their communities.
