The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced the reopening of the Karuma–Kamdini Road to light vehicles after completing a temporary detour at the section that recently caved in.
In a statement, the Ministry confirmed that the detour has been inspected, deemed safe, and is now ready for public use.
“Beginning Monday, December 1, 2025 at 11:00 am, light-traffic vehicles including buses, medium trucks, vans, and saloon cars will be allowed to safely cross the section using the newly completed detour,” the Ministry said.
However, heavy trucks and trailers will continue using the longer Karuma–Olwiyo–Anaka route until engineers certify that the damaged main carriageway is fully restored.
“All heavy vehicles shall continue to divert through the Karuma–Olwiyo–Anaka route both from Kampala to Gulu and from Gulu to Kampala until further notice,” the Ministry added.
Officials noted that full restoration works on the main road will commence immediately now that the detour is operational. Motorists have been advised to drive cautiously and follow safety guidelines while using the bypass.
“Motorists are advised to proceed with caution and follow all traffic management instructions, including the 30 km/hr speed limit along the detour,” the statement reads.
The Karuma–Kamdini Road has been partially restricted since November 16, when a section collapsed, forcing authorities to divert heavy traffic as emergency repairs began.
