Motorists using the Kampala Northern Bypass should prepare for traffic disruptions starting Friday, February 13, 2026, as the Ministry of Works and Transport begins a two-month road maintenance programme on the busy highway.
The works will affect Phase One of the Northern Bypass, particularly the section between Bwaise Interchange and Namungoona Interchange, where traffic will be temporarily diverted within the construction zones.
Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Works and Transport, Bageya Waiswa, said the project is part of routine maintenance aimed at restoring the road to safe driving standards.
“The Ministry of Works and Transport wishes to inform all road users on the planned resumption of periodic maintenance works along the Kampala Northern Bypass, Phase One, commencing on 13th February 2026 for a period of at least two months,” Waiswa said.
He explained that the contractor, M/S Stirling Civil Engineering Ltd, will remove the worn-out asphalt, prepare the road base, apply a primer and lay a new asphalt surface.
“The affected section of the carriageway will be fully closed, with traffic temporarily diverted to the opposite side to allow the works to be carried out safely and efficiently,” Waiswa noted.
The ministry has urged motorists to remain patient and comply with traffic signs and instructions from officers deployed at the site.
“Road users are advised to exercise patience, observe all traffic signage and follow the guidance of traffic personnel on the ground,” Waiswa added.
Drivers have also been encouraged to plan their journeys early and use alternative routes where possible to reduce congestion during the construction period.
While apologising for the inconvenience, the ministry said the temporary disruption is necessary to improve safety and driving comfort on one of Kampala’s most important road corridors.
“We regret any disruption caused and appreciate the cooperation of the public as we undertake works to improve road infrastructure and enhance the overall driving experience,” Waiswa said.
