President Museveni has called on political leaders to rise above party labels and embrace principle-driven politics, stressing that national progress depends on shared programmes and ideology rather than partisan identity.

The remarks were made on Thursday, February 19, 2026, during a meeting with leaders and elders from the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) and Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) representing 10 districts in the Lango sub-region at State House, Entebbe.

Museveni, who also serves as National Chairman of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), emphasized that political cooperation should focus on ideas and national interests rather than party affiliation.

“The label of the party is secondary. What matters is what you support and the programmes you stand for,” he said.

Drawing on his experience as a farmer, he underscored that unity and stability are essential for economic growth, pointing out that citizens’ real needs—hunger, disease, and livelihoods—transcend tribal or religious divisions.

He also highlighted the importance of explaining government policies and programmes to citizens to foster understanding and support.

Leaders from the Lango sub-region pledged to collaborate with the ruling NRM to advance socio-economic transformation.

Hamson Obua, NRM Vice Chairperson for Northern Uganda, described the engagement as historic, noting that the region has increasingly embraced dialogue and peaceful mobilisation.

Maj. Gen. Keith Katungi, Commander of the 5th Infantry Division, praised the sub-region for its shift from sectarian politics to issue-based engagement, while Charles Ogwal, presenting a memorandum on behalf of the group, congratulated the President on his re-election and pledged continued mobilisation for peace and development.

Infrastructure priorities highlighted included key road projects, such as the Dokolo–Namasagali road, to improve connectivity, trade, and livelihoods in Lango.
