Police in Kampala have arrested a school director and matron to aid in investigations into circumstances under which a pupil was found hanging dead in the dormitory.
According to Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Racheal Kawala, John Terry Kisekka, 14, a primary five pupil was found hanging dead in the dormitory at Kololo Junior School, Kayunga Cell, Gombe Ward, Wakiso Town Council, Wakiso District by colleagues as they returned from evening preps.
“Preliminary findings indicate that on at about 2000hrs, as pupils returned to the dormitory from evening prep, they found Terry hanging inside the dormitory. They immediately informed the matron, who notified the school director. Police were later informed,” Kawala said.
She said officers found the body suspended with a red scarf tied to a roofing pole inside one of the school dormitories.
Kawala said while the body was conveyed to Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem examination, the school director and the matron have been arrested to assist with ongoing investigations.
She said investigations are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the suspected suicide.
“We urge schools, parents, and guardians to promptly report to the police or seek professional help whenever signs of depression or distress are observed in children. Taking time to talk to children, both at school and at home, is crucial.”
