The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), operating under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), together with the Somali National Army (SNA), have captured a senior Al-Shabaab commander alive during a coordinated operation in the Mubaraka area.
The suspect, identified as Salaad Cusmaan Macalin, also known as “Sahm,” was apprehended on Wednesday in the north-western outskirts of Mubaraka by AUSSOM troops and the SNA Gorgor Unit 203.
Macalin, 40, serves as a battalion commander within Al-Shabaab. At the time of his capture, he was reportedly conducting reconnaissance on SNA defensive positions in preparation for an imminent attack on Mubaraka. Intelligence indicates he was operating with a group of fighters, including approximately 17 foreign militants recently relocated from Jilib to Ugunji.
Brigadier General Jackson Kayanja, Sector One Commander, commended the troops for the operation, describing it as a major breakthrough in efforts to weaken Al-Shabaab’s capabilities in the region. He called on local leaders and communities to continue supporting security forces to enhance stability and safety.
The UPDF, in collaboration with the Somali National Army under AUSSOM, continues to pursue operations aimed at neutralising terrorist threats and supporting the restoration of lasting peace and security in Somalia.
Over the years, the UPDF has been instrumental in securing key towns and districts, disrupting Al-Shabaab operations, and training Somali security forces to strengthen local capacity.
The UPDF has participated in frontline operations, intelligence-led missions, and community protection initiatives, earning recognition for its professionalism and commitment to regional security. Its continued presence under AUSSOM highlights Uganda’s strategic role in counterterrorism efforts and its dedication to supporting Somalia’s path to lasting peace.
The capture of Macalin underscores the success of these longstanding efforts, demonstrating the effectiveness of combined UPDF and SNA operations in degrading terrorist networks and reinforcing stability in vulnerable areas.
