Former URA’s acting manager for public and corporate affairs, Robert Wamala Lumanyiak has died in an accident , this website has learnt.
Lumanyika was among the three people killed and four others injured in a fatal road crash involving a Toyota Hiace vehicle and an elephant in Murchison Falls National Park.
The accident happened at about 8:00 p.m. on May 24, 2026, along the Arua Road within the national park in Nwoya District.
According to Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura, the Toyota Hiace registration number UA 20121AA was carrying seven officials from the Uganda Revenue Authority who were travelling from Arua to Kampala after official duty when the vehicle knocked a crossing elephant.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the Toyota Hiace knocked a crossing elephant and subsequently lost control of the vehicle,” Kananura said.
Police said three occupants died instantly while four others, including the driver, sustained injuries.
“Police responded promptly and rushed the injured victims to Kiryandongo Hospital for medical attention before they were later transferred to Kampala for further management,” Kananura added.
The bodies of the deceased were conveyed to Anaka Hospital Mortuary pending postmortem examinations.
Kananura urged motorists to remain vigilant while driving through wildlife-protected areas, especially at night.
“Motorists are strongly urged to exercise extreme caution while driving through national parks and wildlife-protected areas, especially during night hours, and to strictly observe speed limits to avoid such incidents,” he said.
The crash has once again highlighted the dangers motorists face while travelling through national parks, where wild animals frequently cross roads, particularly after dark.
