Jacob Markson Oboth-Oboth, the Member of Parliament for West Budama County South, has been elected Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament.
He replaces Bukedea Woman MP Anita Among, whose tenure as Speaker of the 11th Parliament ended amid a corruption probe.
Oboth-Oboth won the vote convincingly, securing 441 votes.
His main rival, NUP’s Paul Mwiru of Jinja South East Division, came second with 60 votes, while Laroo Pecce MP Nobert Mao received 15 votes, and three votes were declared invalid.
The election, held on Monday at Kololo Independence Grounds, was presided over by Chief Justice Flavian Zeija and attended by 519 MPs.
President Museveni also oversaw the proceedings.
Born on 13 April 1971, Oboth-Oboth, a member of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) previously served as State Minister for Defence and, in the 11th Parliament, chaired several key committees including Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Rules, Discipline and Privileges, and Natural Resources.
