The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has praised 20 General Officers who are set to retire later this year for their dedicated and selfless service to the country.

The commendation came during a documentation exercise at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs headquarters in Mbuya, a key step in the retirement process.

Representing the Chief of Joint Staff, Major General James Kinalwa acknowledged the officers’ important role in national security and the growth of the military.

“Your sacrifices, commitment, and leadership have significantly contributed to peace, stability, and the strengthening of our military institution,” Maj Gen Kinalwa said.

He added that retirement should be seen not as the end of service, but as the start of a new phase.

“Retirement is not the end of usefulness or relevance, but a transition into another important phase where you continue serving your families, communities, and the nation,” he said.

Maj Gen Kinalwa highlighted that the experience, discipline, and integrity gained by the retiring officers is a national asset.

He noted their courage and dedication in challenging conditions, which helped shape military policies and train future leaders.

“Many of you commanded troops in difficult operational environments, mentored younger officers, strengthened civil-military relations, and contributed to regional and international peace and security initiatives,” he said.

He encouraged the officers to continue offering their knowledge in advisory, academic, and mentorship roles, and to remain ambassadors of the UPDF, upholding its values of discipline and professionalism.

Batch 16 of the UPDF retirement programme includes one General, two Lieutenant Generals, four Major Generals, and thirteen Brigadier Generals.
