A recent study found that more than half of adults do not have a will or estate plan. While the statistic may seem surprising, it is also understandable. Many people spend their lives working hard to build wealth, grow businesses, acquire property and provide for their families, yet few take time to plan how those assets will continue to protect their loved ones when they are no longer around.

Perhaps that is because many people associate estate planning with death.

But estate planning is not about death. It is about life, responsibility and the people we leave behind.

I recently reflected on the experiences of two families. Both had spent decades building successful lives. They had created businesses, invested in property, educated their children and earned respect within their communities. From the outside, both families appeared to have achieved success.

Then tragedy struck.

The heads of both families passed away unexpectedly.

In the first family, grief was overwhelming, as it always is when someone beloved is lost. However, the family had one important advantage: preparation.

Their father had written a will, organised his affairs, documented his wishes and, most importantly, had communicated openly with his family. Everyone understood their responsibilities and expectations. Although they mourned deeply, they remained united. They were able to honour his wishes, continue managing the family business and support one another through one of life’s most difficult moments.

The second family had accumulated even greater wealth, but they had never taken time to plan. Estate planning was always something they intended to do “one day.” Unfortunately, that day never came.

What followed was painful. Family members who had always shared a bond suddenly found themselves divided over decisions they had never prepared to make. The business suffered, relationships became strained and legal battles replaced family discussions.

The wealth remained, but the peace disappeared.

The difference between these two families was not the amount of money they had accumulated.

It was preparation.

That experience changed the way I think about wellness.

For many years, conversations around financial wellness have focused on earning more, saving consistently, investing wisely, diversifying income and protecting assets. These conversations are important because financial security creates opportunities and provides stability.

However, financial wellness is only one part of a truly healthy life.

Mental wellness enables us to make sound decisions before challenges arise. Social wellness reminds us that the people who walk with us through moments of joy and hardship are among our greatest assets.

Wealth can provide comfort, but relationships provide strength.

The truth is that your support system is part of your legacy.

The people who will carry your values, care for your children, manage your business, honour your wishes and preserve your family’s unity deserve more than inherited assets. They deserve clarity. They deserve preparation. They deserve peace.

That is why estate planning should not be viewed merely as preparing legal documents.

It is one of the greatest expressions of love and responsibility a person can offer their family.

It says: “Even when I am no longer here, I have thought about you.”

It says: “I do not want uncertainty to become your burden.”

It says: “Our relationship matters enough for me to protect it.”

As leaders, parents, professionals and entrepreneurs, we often ask whether we are building enough wealth. Perhaps we should also ask whether we are building enough peace.

Because a legacy is not only measured by the value of the assets we leave behind.

It is measured by whether our families remain united.

It is measured by whether our children understand our values as much as they understand the valuables we leave behind.

It is measured by whether the people we love feel protected long after we are gone.

Estate planning is not about expecting the worst. It is about preparing responsibly for whatever the future may bring.

If we truly believe wellness includes financial, mental and social wellbeing, then estate planning must become part of that conversation. It protects our wealth, reduces uncertainty and strengthens the relationships that matter most.

In just 90 days, you can begin organising your affairs, having the conversations you have postponed and creating a legacy that gives your family more than financial security.

You can give them clarity.

You can give them unity.

You can give them peace.

Because in the end, the greatest inheritance you leave behind is not measured by the size of your estate.

It is measured by the peace your family experiences because you chose to plan.
