A NIRA District Registration officer has been remanded to prison over allegations of extorting money from newly appointed Registration Assistants.
Mr. Isaac Nabuguuzi, who serves as the NIRA District Registration Officer in Kyankwanzi District, was arraigned before the Kyankwanzi Magistrate’s Court on Thursday and charged with demanding money by menaces. He was subsequently remanded until August 17, 2025.
The arrest and prosecution were spearheaded by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, in partnership with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
According to investigators, between June and July 2025, Mr. Nabuguuzi allegedly exploited his office to extort money from more than 50 newly recruited Registration Assistants shortly after they received their first salaries.
“He used threats of job termination to coerce them into sending money after they were paid in June,” the Anti-Corruption Unit stated.
Each of the victims reportedly paid between shs300,000 and shs500,000, either in cash or via mobile money transfers.
Mr. Nabuguuzi is said to have justified the payments as a “token of appreciation” for allegedly helping them secure their positions.
The case has drawn sharp attention to corruption in recruitment and deployment processes in public institutions. Authorities are urging more victims and whistleblowers to come forward as investigations continue.
