Residents of Kikuube District are today heading to the polls to elect a new District LCV Chairperson in a by-election organised by the Electoral Commission.

Voting commenced at 7:00 a.m. across the district’s 330 polling stations, where a total of 153,186 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots.

According to the Electoral Commission, the voter register comprises 77,529 female voters and 75,657 male voters.

The race is being contested by Paddy Kisembo of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and Fenekansi Timanyire of the National Unity Platform (NUP).

Speaking ahead of the exercise, Electoral Commission Deputy Spokesperson Paul Bukenya said all preparations had been completed to ensure a smooth, transparent, and lawful electoral process.

Bukenya noted that election materials were delivered on time to facilitate the timely opening of polling stations, while supervision mechanisms had been put in place to ensure that voting, counting, tallying, and declaration of results are conducted in accordance with the law.

“We finalized all the arrangements for the by-election, including the delivery of materials to ensure the timely opening of polling stations, as well as supervision of the exercise to ensure that the polling process is conducted efficiently and in accordance with the law,” Bukenya said.

The by-election follows the death of former District Chairperson Peter Banura Akiki, who died after being knocked down by a speeding taxi on April 4.

Ahead of polling day, Electoral Commission Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama on Wednesday chaired a stakeholders’ meeting attended by candidates, political party representatives, election observers, security agencies, and Electoral Commission officials.

The meeting reviewed polling day procedures and reaffirmed a shared commitment to ensuring a peaceful, free, and fair election.

Justice Byabakama urged both candidates and voters to maintain peace and allow the electoral process to proceed without disruption.

Security agencies have also assured residents of adequate security throughout the voting process as voters exercise their democratic right to choose the district’s next political leader.
