Former Ethics and Integrity Minister Miria Matembe, 73, has been granted bail by Luzira Magistrate’s court.
Matembe, who was remanded to Luzira government prison on Tuesday over sectarianism charges was granted a shs3 million non-cash bond .
Grade One Magistrate, Sheilla Gloria Atim reasoned that due to Matembe’s ill health, presumption of innocence and of being of advanced age, it was only prudent that she is released on bail.
The charges
The state accuses Matembe of promoting sectarianism contrary to Section 38(1) (d) of the Penal Code Act.
The prosecution alleges that in June 2026, while appearing on a DK TV Uganda programme in Nakawa Division, Kampala, Matembe stated that all our taxes are being spent on Banyankole women ministers.
The state contends that the remarks were likely to incite hostility, hatred, or ill will against members of the Banyankole community.
