At least 14 people have been confirmed dead and 28 others injured following a fatal road crash involving an Opit Travellers bus and a trailer at Bobi Trading Centre along the Kampala–Gulu Highway.
According to Traffic and Road Safety Police spokesperson SP Michael Kananura, the crash occurred on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at about 9:34 p.m.
Kananura said the collision involved an Isuzu bus, registration number UBE 110H, belonging to Opit Travellers Company, and a Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer, registration numbers KBS 564D/ZE 7948.
“Preliminary reports indicate that the driver of the bus, who was allegedly speeding, attempted to avoid a pedestrian crossing the road, lost control of the vehicle and collided head-on with the oncoming trailer,” Kananura said in a police statement.
He confirmed that 14 people died in the crash, while 28 others sustained injuries and were rushed to various medical facilities for treatment.
Police said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing.
Kananura urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads and strictly observe speed limits, especially during night hours when visibility is reduced.
“We urge all motorists to strictly observe speed limits, especially during night when visibility is reduced. Drivers are also reminded to remain vigilant, anticipate pedestrian movement in trading centres and always drive at speeds that allow them to stop safely,” he said.
The police have continued to warn drivers against speeding, reckless driving and failure to exercise extra caution in busy areas where pedestrian movement is high.
