Breaking into Uganda’s music industry can be difficult, with many artists spending years trying to establish themselves while others enjoy brief periods of success before fading from the spotlight.

Vinka has followed a different trajectory.

Since releasing her first music, the singer has built a sustained career, producing songs such as Malaika, Chips Na Ketchup, Bailando and All Over You. Her distinctive voice and energetic stage performances have helped her establish a recognisable identity within Uganda’s music scene.

Her journey began away from the spotlight. Before becoming a recording artist, Vinka worked as a talent manager at Swangz Avenue.

During a period when the agency was searching for a female artist, she was encouraged to consider stepping in front of the microphone herself.

Speaking during a recent appearance on the Ugandan Boy podcast, Vinka said she had always had an interest in performing but recognised that becoming an artist would require her to leave the relative security of working behind the scenes.

“The desire was always there,” she said. “I was a top performer in high school. But stepping out from talent management meant putting myself on the line. On stage, every choice becomes personal.”

Her early career was not without criticism. Some listeners questioned her vocal style, describing it as heavy and raspy, while others criticised the tone of her voice.

Vinka said the criticism ultimately encouraged her to embrace the qualities that distinguished her from other performers.

“I turned their harshness into curiosity,” she said. “People were talking because I sounded different. I decided I was never going to change my tone to make anyone comfortable. Staying true to my sound is what set me apart.”

Her transition from talent management to performing also gave her an understanding of the work required to build a sustainable career.

“Working behind the scenes taught me the work ethic to build a career,” she said. “Becoming the artist taught me courage. It taught me to trust my own instincts when everyone else doubted me.”

That experience has shaped her approach to her music and public performances as she continues to navigate Uganda’s competitive entertainment industry.

Her career has also intersected with major brands operating in Uganda. Vinka has worked with Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL), including on Red Card, a song developed around an anti-drunk-driving message.

The collaboration formed part of efforts to communicate responsible drinking messages through music and popular culture.

Vinka is now preparing for another major stage in her career. She is scheduled to headline the Live & Loud Concert at Lugogo Cricket Oval this August.

The concert is expected to provide another measure of the singer’s popularity and the audience she has built over the years.

Her journey from working behind the scenes at Swangz Avenue to preparing to headline one of Kampala’s major concert venues reflects a career built over time rather than on a single breakout moment.

For emerging artists, Vinka says the key is to develop their craft while remaining committed to their purpose.

“You have to believe in your purpose before anyone else validates it. Respect the craft and stay disciplined every day,” she said.
