Young Ugandans are being challenged to turn climate and environmental challenges into practical solutions as the Uganda Climate Innovation Challenge (UCIC) 2026 opens with Shs37 million in prizes, alongside opportunities for young innovators to access finance, mentorship, markets and partnerships.

The challenge was launched during the third Annual Africa Climate Finance Conference at Kampala Marriott Hotel, targeting young innovators, entrepreneurs, start-ups, researchers and creatives developing solutions to Uganda’s climate and environmental challenges.

UCIC focuses on five areas: clean energy innovation, e-mobility, circular economy, circular regenerative agriculture, and climate art and storytelling.

Isaac Ndyamuhaki, National Director of the Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) Uganda, said the challenge is intended to go beyond rewarding innovative ideas by creating an ecosystem that helps young people take their solutions to scale.

“Innovation alone is not enough. Young people need finance, markets, mentorship and partnerships to take their solutions to scale.”

The organisers say many young Ugandans are already developing responses to challenges such as waste management, unreliable energy, changing weather patterns and transport emissions. However, limited access to finance and markets often prevents promising ideas from growing into viable enterprises.

UCIC is therefore designed to identify these solutions and connect innovators to the support they need to develop them into sustainable businesses and impactful climate solutions.

Climate change is increasingly affecting livelihoods across Uganda through unpredictable rainfall, shifting agricultural seasons, environmental degradation and growing pressure on natural resources.

The challenge seeks to shift the narrative from viewing young people mainly as victims of climate change to recognising them as solution providers, innovators and entrepreneurs.

Under the circular economy category, innovators can develop businesses that turn waste into useful products, promote recycling and reuse, or create new ways of reducing waste.

The e-mobility category targets solutions that can make transportation cleaner, including innovations in electric vehicles, charging infrastructure, battery management and maintenance.

In agriculture, the challenge is seeking innovations that can help farmers adapt to changing climatic conditions while improving soil health, productivity and resource efficiency.

Clean-energy innovators are being encouraged to develop solutions that can expand access to reliable and cleaner energy for households and businesses.

The inclusion of climate art and storytelling also reflects the organisers’ view that climate action requires more than technology.

Films, photography, music, social media campaigns and other creative works can help communities understand environmental challenges, influence public attitudes and encourage behavioural change.

For many young innovators, developing an idea is only the first step.

Building prototypes, testing technologies, acquiring equipment, hiring technical expertise and reaching customers all require financing. Young entrepreneurs, however, often struggle to access traditional loans because they lack collateral, established businesses or sufficient financial records.

The organisers hope UCIC will help bridge some of these gaps by exposing promising innovators to potential investors, mentors, markets and strategic partners.

The Shs37 million prize fund is expected to provide an initial boost, but organisers say the broader objective is to create a pipeline through which innovations can continue receiving support beyond the competition.

This is particularly important for young people developing solutions in sectors such as clean energy, sustainable agriculture, waste management and electric mobility, where scaling often requires significant investment.

The challenge comes at a time when Uganda is seeking greater participation by young people in the emerging green economy.

As investment grows in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, waste management, clean transport and other climate-related sectors, young entrepreneurs could benefit from new business and employment opportunities.

However, innovators need more than creativity to take advantage of these opportunities. They also need business skills, technical support, financing and customers willing to adopt their products and services.

UCIC seeks to provide a platform where some of these connections can be made.

The national scope of the challenge is also expected to bring attention to innovations emerging outside Kampala, including ideas developed by young farmers, university students, community entrepreneurs, technicians and creatives.

The organisers say the ultimate success of UCIC will not simply be measured by the number of applications received or the winners of the Shs37 million prize fund.

The bigger question will be whether supported innovations can survive, attract additional investment, create jobs and deliver measurable environmental benefits.

For Uganda, the opportunity is to build a stronger pipeline of home-grown climate solutions.

For young people, the challenge offers an opportunity to transform problems they encounter in their communities into businesses and innovations capable of creating wider impact.

As applications open, young Ugandans developing solutions in clean energy, e-mobility, agriculture, circular economy, and climate art and storytelling are being encouraged to participate.
