ATC Uganda in partnership with Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has launched a Digital Community (DC) at Makindye Division Headquarters in Kampala as part of its efforts to promote digital literacy

A Digital Community is an ICT learning centre or digitally connected space equipped with computers and internet providing instructor-led computer lessons and digital skilling to underserved communities with an aim to improve quality of life in the communities providing free internet access and various digital resources to the local community, benefiting students and residents alike.

These communities have empowered learners and their communities through digital literacy, skilling for employability and entrepreneurship, innovation, and increased access to health and financial services.

Speaking during the function ,UCC Executive Director Hon Nyombi Thembo commended ATC Uganda and KCCA for their collaboration in launching the Makindye Digital Community, highlighting its role in advancing digital literacy and inclusion.

“This initiative is a testament to what we can achieve when public and private entities unite for the greater good of our communities. The digital community program aligns perfectly with Uganda’s Vision 2040 and the digital transformation roadmap, which emphasizes digitization as a cornerstone of development. Programs like these are not just about connectivity; they are about equity and empowerment, providing access to free ICT training, education, and entrepreneurship opportunities for underserved communities,” Thembo said.

He also emphasized the importance of bridging the digital divide, stating, “By bringing digital resources to areas like the ghettos, we are creating gateways to opportunity and empowering individuals to build better futures. Digital skills are essential in today’s world, and initiatives like the Digital Community are key to ensuring inclusive growth across Uganda.”

Thembo acknowledged ATC Uganda’s contribution, adding, “ATC’s support in providing connectivity and fostering digital literacy is invaluable in helping us achieve our shared vision of a digitally inclusive Uganda.”

Speaking at the launch at the Makindye Division Headquarters, American Tower’s Group, Senior Vice President, and Chair of the Digital Communities Governing Council, Ms Mneesha Nahata expressed her excitement about the launch and the program’s broader vision.

“Our digital community program exemplifies the power of partnerships between public and private sectors to bridge the digital divide. It is an honor to launch this digital community for the people of Makindye, as part of our goal to positively impact the lives of at least two million people by 2030 worldwide.”

She reflected on the program’s transformative potential, quoting a child’s poster from a recent visit to a South African digital community: “Education breeds confidence. Confidence breeds hope. Hope breeds peace.”

She  emphasized her anticipation for the program’s impact in Makindye, stating, “I am eager to see how this Digital Community will empower individuals and foster growth in this community.”

Ms. Suzette Victor, Director Sustainability at ATC Africa, highlighted the significance of the digital community initiative as the cornerstone of the company’s corporate social responsibility efforts.

“The digital community initiative is a flagship program that promotes digital literacy and inclusion, providing free training, internet access, and resources to underserved communities. With 42 digital communities established in Uganda, we are proud of this expansion and its alignment with our mission to build a more connected Africa and Uganda.”

She further encouraged the community to embrace the opportunity.

“I urge everyone to take full advantage of these resources to learn new skills and thrive in today’s digital world. Together, we can create a more inclusive and connected society.”

Dorothy Ssemanda, Chief Executive Officer of ATC Uganda, underscored the transformative impact of the digital community Initiative and its role in uplifting Ugandan communities. She stated:

“Our digital community centers are more than just computer labs; they are transformative spaces equipped with internet access, computers, and skilled instructors offering training in vital ICT skills like Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. These centers are free of charge to all community members—youth and adults alike—ensuring no one is left behind in today’s digital age.”

She emphasized the significance of empowering youth.

“With half of Uganda’s population aged 15 and below, we recognize our responsibility to help skill the youth and provide opportunities for a brighter future. By equipping individuals with ICT certifications, we are giving them a critical start toward securing jobs and building sustainable careers.”

“Our partnerships have allowed us to expand infrastructure and digital resources across Kampala, benefitting thousands of residents. Together, we’re not only bridging the digital divide but also fostering innovation and growth in our communities.”

Monica Nyakaiski the Head of ICT at KCCA, who also represented KCCA acting Executive Director Frank Rusa commended ATC Uganda for complimenting the Smart City agenda which aims to integrate technology into our urban landscape to improve the quality of life for all our citizens.

“The digital community projects we are launching today are more than just technological advancements; they are catalysts for change. By enhancing connectivity and safety, we are creating an environment where businesses can thrive, students can access educational resources, and residents can feel secure.”
