The Ugandan government has signed a shs40.9 billion contract with a local company for the construction of 6.06 kilometres of four roads in Nansana Municipality in Wakiso district.
Winner Global Enterprises Construction Company will be constructing the roads are under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Program .
The contract was signed on Tuesday at Nansana Municipality headquarters.
The project includes upgrading of Nansana- Nabweru road measuring 2km, New Era Nabweru Katoke Link (2km) , Nabweru Lugoba and Nabweru Kazo Central Link( 1.06km) which will be paved to standard.
Nansana Municipality Town Clerk Festo Tandeka said the scope of work will include relocation of utility services like electricity, water, telecommunication and other utilities.
“The project is to be completed in 18 months. The contractor is going to provide employment to our local people but also make use of services like houses which will enable our people benefit but also the night economy in this area is going to boom,” Tandeka said.
He added that the project will see construction of raised footways , road signs, road markings and installation of solar street lights.
The Under Secretary Ministry of Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs Monica Edemachu said the contractor is required to deliver quality work and in time.
“Our humble appeal to you is to work closely with our teams to ensure that you put all the necessary safeguard measures and ensure implementation has no stopover at anyone moment. We want to compare your work with the work of other contractors who are foreign based to see if you can. The precedent you set will enable us in future procure more local contractors,” Edemachu said.
“This program is result-based. If you don’t perform, Nansana will lose marks and if you don’t address environmental issues, Nansana will have challenges. We don’t want to see this kind of scenario.”
The Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Program (GKMA-UDP), is a program meant to address infrastructure and service delivery challenges facing the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area (GKMA).
The program is being financed by the World Bank, which has committed $566 million through the Program-for-Results (PforR) financing model.
Of this amount, $518 million is in credit and $48 million in grants, with an additional €40 million from the Agence Française de Dévelopment (AFD) and counterpart funding from the Government of Uganda.
The goal is to promote sustainable urban development, improve infrastructure, enhance mobility, and create job opportunities across the metropolitan area, which includes Kampala City, Wakiso, Mukono and Mpigi districts.
It also targets infrastructural development in KCCA, Entebbe, Kira, Makindye-Ssabagabo, Mukono and Nansana municipalities.
