The Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) has joined sports journalists in condemning recent remarks made by FUFA President Moses Magogo regarding the ongoing debate on ticket pricing for Uganda Cranes matches.
Magogo alleged that journalists have been fueling the campaign by fans who are protesting the high cost of matchday tickets.
He claimed that those criticizing the pricing have free access to Namboole Stadium on match days as part of their professional privileges.
Furthermore, he suggested that a small group of about 10 individuals was being paid to position themselves as advocates of fairness under the guise of journalism.
In response, USPA, through a statement signed by its Secretary-General Shafik Ssenoga, expressed discontent with Magogo’s remarks, describing them as demeaning and disrespectful to sports journalists.
“We find these remarks demeaning and disrespectful to sports journalists, and these statements undermine the vital role that the media plays in promoting professionalism and ethical reporting in Uganda,” USPA stated.
The association emphasized the importance of a positive working relationship between FUFA and the media, noting that such collaboration is essential for the growth of sports in the country.
“As an organization dedicated to upholding professionalism and ethical reporting in sports journalism, we believe that mutual respect and collaboration between FUFA and the media are crucial for the growth of the sport,” USPA remarked.
USPA further highlighted the fundamental role the media plays in keeping the public informed and ensuring accountability among stakeholders in the sports sector.
“The media plays an indispensable role in informing the public, highlighting achievements, and holding stakeholders accountable,” the statement added.
The association also cautioned that disparaging remarks against journalists could create unnecessary divisions and hinder progress. It confirmed that it is actively engaging FUFA to address the matter and seek an amicable resolution.
“Disparaging remarks against journalists only serve to create unnecessary divisions and hinder progress. We are also engaging FUFA over this matter, and we hope to have this solved with an amicable solution,” USPA stated.
