Afrigo Band has assured its fans, clients and partners that the legendary group will continue operating following the death of its founder and bandleader, Moses Matovu.
Matovu, popularly known as Papa Moi, died on September 24, 2026, after more than five decades at the helm of one of Uganda’s most celebrated music groups.
In a statement issued by the band’s management, Afrigo said Matovu had laid a strong foundation that would enable the group to continue operating in his absence.
“The Afrigo Band will continue to live on in his honour,” the management said.
James Wasula, the band’s Executive Director, said the group remains intact and committed to maintaining the standards established by Matovu.
“All bookings shall be honoured. The band remains intact and committed to delivering the quality performance that Afrigo is known for,” Wasula said.
The management urged fans and clients not to lose heart following Matovu’s death, saying the discipline, talent and values he instilled in the band over more than 50 years remain firmly in place.
“Do not lose heart. Moses Matovu laid a solid foundation for over 50 years. The discipline, talent, and values he instilled in the band remain intact and will continue,” the management said.
The assurance is aimed at addressing concerns among clients and corporate partners with existing engagements with the band. Management confirmed that all existing bookings will be honoured.
Afrigo Band management also thanked the Government, Uganda Police Force, fellow artists and members of the public for the support extended to the band and Matovu’s family following his death.
The band said it would continue its operations in honour of its founder, whose career helped shape Uganda’s live music scene for decades.
