NUP’s presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, on Monday addressed large crowds in Nakawa East and West, calling on residents to vote for the “umbrella” and embrace political change.
Bobi Wine’s campaign trail began in Nakawa East, where he urged voters to support Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, the party’s deputy spokesperson currently in prison on charges under the Public Order Management Act.
“The people of Nakawa East, vote for Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro who is in prison. Vote for him and make a statement to the regime that the power of the people is stronger than military power,” Kyagulanyi said to enthusiastic supporters.
He then moved to Nakawa West, amidst teargas and heavy deployment. Here he rallied voters to actively participate in shaping the change they seek.
“Be part of the change you are looking for if you want the development that you yearn for,” he told the crowd, urging them to back the NUP presidential candidate.
Other party leaders also addressed supporters during the day. Joel Ssenyonyi, the incumbent Nakawa MP, encouraged residents to vote for the umbrella if they want tangible improvements such as better roads, drainage, and job creation.
“We are in town but every year we decry bad roads, city floods, and unemployment. Vote for Kyagulanyi if you want all this worked upon,” Ssenyonyi said.
Meanwhile, Ali Bukeni, popularly known as Nubian Li, who is contesting for Nakawa Mayor, urged Kyagulanyi to tackle youth unemployment in the area. He also called on him to close down what he described as “safe houses” in Nakawa.
“Mr President, when you get power, please work on the issue of unemployment among youths in Nakawa. Nakawa is full of safe houses—we ask you to close them when you get into power,” Nubian Li appealed.
Bobi Wine’s campaign continues today in Kabarole, Fort Portal City, and Bunyangabu, as he seeks to consolidate support ahead of upcoming elections.
