A bus belonging to Gulu Secondary School has been involved in a fatal road crash at Kigumba along the Kampala–Gulu highway while transporting students for an educational tour to Jinja.
According to police, the accident occurred at around 5:44am when the bus driver attempted to overtake another vehicle and collided head-on with a Fuso truck that was coming from the opposite direction.
The bus conductor died on the spot, while 17 students sustained injuries. Of these, 2 are in critical condition and 15 suffered minor injuries.
The injured students have been admitted to Kiryandongo Hospital for treatment.
Police spokesperson for traffic and road safety, SP Michael Kananura, confirmed the incident, saying investigations are underway to establish the exact cause of the crash.
“According to reports, the crash occurred when the bus driver attempted to overtake another vehicle and collided head-on with a Fuso truck traveling in the opposite direction,” SP Michael Kananura said.
Authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution, especially when transporting school children and during early morning journeys when visibility is often low.
