Uganda has received a financial boost USD 2.3 million(approximately shs 8.7 Billion) from the Government of Denmark to support emergency food assistance for new refugee arrivals.
The contribution, which will benefit about 80,000 refugees, will be channeled through cash transfers aimed at addressing the growing food needs in refugee settlements across the country.
Officials said the support comes at a critical time when food rations have been a major challenge for both humanitarian agencies and host communities.
According to the latest report by UNHCR, Uganda hosts over 1.9 million refugees and asylum seekers, making it the largest refugee population in Africa and one of the largest in the world. The majority come from South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a significant recent influx from Sudan.
Total number: Over 1.9 million refugees and asylum seekers as of September 2025.
Primary countries of origin: South Sudan (54%) and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (32%) make up the largest groups.
Other nationalities: Refugees also come from Eritrea, Somalia, Burundi, and 32 other countries.
Recent arrivals: Uganda has seen a large number of new arrivals, including over 443,000 since January 2022 and 69,000 since the conflict in Sudan began in 2023.
