UBOS Executive Director, Dr. Chris Mukiza has scoffed at critics who have asked him to resign over errors in the 2024 census results.
A section of the public has questioned errors in the population growth for tribes especially Acholi and Bagisu which showed there was a decline.
There were also murmurs in regards decline in the number of Catholics, Muslims and Anglicans.
Speaking on Tuesday, Dr. Mukiza admitted there were errors but said they were minor.
“I have bad news for those who want me to resign. I won’t do it because I am convinced, I did a good job. Every time a newspaper makes a mistake, do they close it? Errors are made every day. In your homes you make very many errors, do you leave the home because you have made an error,” Mukiza told journalists.
The UBOS ED said there is a deliberate scheme to discredit him, noting that the errors in the census results have added to the matter.
“I am one of the best statisticians in the land but this issue of asking me to resign summarises the hullaballoo. Why are you wasting time on wrong data and not say the truth that you want this man’s neck?”
Mukiza insisted that the census results are correct, save for minor errors that he said were caused by swapping of the data for Bakiga and Bagisu.
“We need to style up. Whether you hate the head of institution, know this is the data we got. It was just a transposition problem and nothing much.”
He said the errors have since been rectified .
