City Hall Court in Kampala has remanded a police officer who was captured in a viral video assaulting a supermarket attendant at a Shell fuel station in Kyanja, Nakawa Division.
ASP Clive Nsiima appeared in court on Monday, where he was formally charged with assault and malicious damage to property after allegedly slapping the victim, Pellan Atuhumuriize, and smashing her Infinix smartphone during the incident.
The video of the confrontation, which circulated widely on social media last week, shows Nsiima engaging in a heated exchange before physically attacking the supermarket attendant, sparking public outrage and calls for disciplinary action from the police leadership.
On Monday afternoon, two charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm contrary to section 219 of the Penal Code Act and malicious damage contrary to section 312(1) of the Penal Code Act were read against him.
According to prosecution, ASP Nsiima,34, a police officer attached to the counter terrorsim directoate , oil and gas department on October, 7at Shell Fule Station in Kyanja assaulted Pellan Atuhumuriise occasioning actual bodily harm on her as well as damaging her mobile phone.
Nsiima denied the charges.
State prosecutor, Mercy Yamangusho told court that investigations into the matter are still ongoing.
The accused’s lawyer, Hamza Kyamanywa told court that the police officer and the victim cum his accuser have reconciled and that she has filed an additional statement for the matter to be settled out of court.
His lawyer informed the magistrate that the two parties had since entered into reconciliation discussions, suggesting that an understanding had been reached outside court.
He asked that court grants bail to his client, presenting three sureties.
However, the prosecution insisted that the case proceeds under the law, given the gravity and public interest attached to the matter.
The trial senior principal grade one magistrate Nicholas Aisu adjourned remanded the police officer to October 16 and adjourned the case to then.
