The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has urged commanders of the Special Forces Command (SFC) to embrace rapid advances in technology to remain effective in responding to the changing nature of modern warfare.
Gen Kainerugaba made the remarks while presiding over a handover and takeover ceremony at the SFC headquarters in Entebbe, where Maj Gen David Mugisha handed over command to Maj Gen Asaph Mweteise Nyakikuru.
Mweteise recently took over the SFC command following his appointment and promotion to the rank of Major General.
The CDF called on SFC commanders to continuously study the evolving global security environment and adopt modern technological approaches to military operations.
He said the changing nature of warfare requires military commanders to remain adaptable and continuously update their knowledge and capabilities.
The SFC is a specialised component of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) responsible for executing special missions, securing key national installations and providing protection to the President and the First Family.
Reflecting on the development of the force, Gen Kainerugaba recalled beginning his military training in 1994 at Sera Kasenyi Training School, when the institution had limited infrastructure and resources.
He commended officers for developing the SFC from its origins as the Presidential Protection Unit (PPU) into what he described as a formidable military formation.
The CDF also congratulated both commanders, thanking Maj Gen Mugisha for his leadership of the SFC and wishing him success as he leaves to undertake a National Defence College (NDC) course abroad.
He expressed confidence in Maj Gen Mweteise as he assumes leadership of the formation.
In his remarks, Maj Gen Mugisha thanked the Commander-in-Chief and the CDF for the opportunity to serve in the SFC and for supporting his continued professional development.
Maj Gen Mweteise, in accepting command, thanked Gen Kainerugaba for his mentorship and continued support to the UPDF.
The ceremony was attended by senior military officers, including Chief of the Joint Staff Lt Gen Jack Bakasumba, Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security Maj Gen Richard Otto, Joint Staff Finance Brig Gen Robert Mugabe and SFC Chief of Staff Brig Gen Mango Baraza.
Also present was Col Susan Lakot, representing the Joint Staff Training and Doctrine, alongside SFC group and brigade commanders and directors.
