The Archdiocese of Kampala has ordained nine priests and six deacons in a colourful ceremony held at St. Mary’s Cathedral Rubaga, bringing the total number of candidates ordained to Holy Orders to 15.

The ordination Mass was presided over by the Archbishop of Kampala, the Most Rev. Paul Ssemogerere, on Saturday, August 8, 2026, and was attended by thousands of faithful, clergy, religious leaders, relatives and well-wishers.

The nine newly ordained priests are James Kaweesa from Lweza Parish, Edwin Adrian Kangave from Lubaga Parish, Alex Kizito Kaweere from Kitagobwa Parish, Ronald Kakooza from Kkungu-Lukuli Parish, Leonard Sserugo from Kawanda Parish, Victor Mugisha Fernandes from Entebbe Parish, Patrick Kalyango from Mitala Maria Parish, Joseph Santana from Mbuya Parish and Ambrose Lubinga P.O.C.R. from Kawanda Parish.

In his homily, Archbishop Ssemogerere urged the newly ordained priests and deacons to dedicate themselves to serving God and His people with love, humility and selflessness.

“Dear candidates, you are expected to passionately love the people you serve, sanctify them, teach them and shepherd them. You are called to lead God’s people by serving like Jesus, who came to serve, not to be served,” Ssemogerere said.

He encouraged the newly ordained clergy to model their ministry on the life of Jesus Christ, stressing that their calling requires holiness and commitment as they administer the sacraments and guide the faithful.

“You are called to become more like Christ. Jesus is calling you to be holy as you administer the sacraments of God,” he said.

The Archbishop cautioned the new clergy against materialism and other temptations that could distract them from their spiritual mission.

He reminded them that their primary responsibilities include proclaiming the Gospel, administering the sacraments, sanctifying the faithful and blessing the people entrusted to their care.

Ssemogerere also stressed that the priesthood is not a personal possession or a title but a responsibility entrusted to them through the Church.

“This is not a title, but rather a responsibility. We welcome you and look forward to working with you in this ministry,” he said.

He further reminded the newly ordained priests that they now share in the priesthood of the bishop and must therefore exercise their ministry with humility, obedience and dedication.

The Archbishop urged them to foster unity, fraternity and collaboration with fellow clergy and the faithful in the parishes and institutions where they will be assigned.

The ordination marked an important milestone for the Archdiocese of Kampala, as the new priests and deacons begin their ministry in service of the Church and the communities they will be called to serve.
