The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has warned worship centres, bars and entertainment venues against excessive noise, saying those that fail to comply with noise control regulations risk closure and other legal action.
Residents in different parts of Kampala have repeatedly complained about overnight prayers from some worship centres, loud music from bars and night clubs especially in densely populated residential areas.
Due to growing public outcry over excessive noise, KCCA earlier this month issued a 14-day ultimatum to bars, worship centres and entertainment venues, directing them to insulate their premises and comply with the prescribed noise limits.
In a public notice issued on Friday, KCCA said it is strengthening enforcement against noise pollution across Kampala in a move aimed at protecting public health and community wellbeing.
The directive targets restaurants, bars, discotheques, entertainment centres, live bands, concert organisers, DJs, public address system operators and worship centres.
KCCA Executive Director Sharifah Buzeki said all operators must comply with the National Environment (Noise Standards and Control) Regulations, 2003.
“KCCA is strengthening enforcement against noise pollution in Kampala. Please adhere to the prescribed noise limits and let us work together to protect public health and community wellbeing,” Buzeki said.
According to KCCA, residential areas should not exceed 50 decibels during daytime hours and 35 decibels at night, while mixed residential and commercial areas should maintain a limit of 55 decibels during the day and 45 decibels at night.
The authority advised operators to install noise limiters, insulate premises and reduce sound emissions, especially during late-night hours.
KCCA warned that non-compliant establishments could face fines, prosecution, confiscation of equipment, suspension of operations or closure of premises in accordance with the law.
The city authority also asked the public to report noise pollution cases through its hotline, 071900300.
