Lawyer Elias Nalukoola has finally taken oath as the new Member of Parliament for Kawempe North to fill the position left vacant after the death of Muhammad Ssegirinya in January.
In a brief but significant ceremony, Nalukoola took the oath of allegiance, pledging to serve the people of Kawempe diligently.
Accompanied by his wife Nansukusa, his daughter, and his father, Nalukoola expressed gratitude to the Speaker of Parliament for expediting his swearing-in, even though parliamentary sessions were currently on recess.
He noted that the people of Kawempe were relieved to finally have representation, thanking them for standing with him through difficult times.
However, immediately after taking the oath, Nalukoola made a bold request to the Speaker to be given additional time in Parliament to compensate for the period Kawempe North lacked an active representative.
He argued that key issues affecting the constituency had not been raised on the parliamentary floor, and he was eager to bring them to national attention.
During his speech, Nalukoola hailed his party leader, Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), for standing by him and vowed to uphold the values of the National Unity Platform (NUP).
The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, congratulated Nalukoola and the NUP party on their victory, a statement that was met with applause from NUP MPs.
The Leader of Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, congratulated Nalukoola, urging him to remain steadfast in his commitment to the party’s core values.
“We trust you, and we expect you to serve the people of Kawempe with honesty and dedication,” Ssenyonyi stated.
Nalukoola took a moment to appreciate journalists for their relentless coverage of political events, recognizing their bravery in the face of adversity.
However, he strongly condemned the violence that was meted out against journalists and Kawempe voters during the electoral process.
He made a direct appeal to President Museveni, urging him to rein in security forces and ensure that law enforcement officers conduct themselves professionally.
