The Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development has directed all Local Council I (LC I) chairpersons currently participating in election campaigns to temporarily refrain from handling any land-related transactions until the electoral process is concluded.
In a public notice issued by the Ministry’s Communications Division, the directive is intended to protect the integrity of land transactions and prevent fraud and disputes that could arise during the election period.
“As the ongoing Local Council I (LC I) election campaigns approach their conclusion, all LC I Chairpersons who are currently campaigning are advised to refrain from participating in, witnessing, endorsing, recommending, or overseeing any land-related transactions until the electoral process has been concluded,” the Ministry said.
According to the Ministry, the advisory has been issued as a precautionary measure to safeguard land transactions during the transition period.
“This advisory has been issued as a precautionary measure to safeguard the integrity of land transactions during this transition period and to minimize the risk of disputes, fraud, or other irregularities that may arise,” the statement reads.
The Ministry advised members of the public not to rely on campaigning LC I chairpersons for services related to the sale or purchase of land, witnessing or endorsing land agreements, boundary disputes, land ownership verification, or any other land transaction requiring local administrative involvement.
For urgent land transactions, the Ministry urged the public to seek assistance from qualified legal practitioners or use other lawful channels.
“The Ministry urges the public to exercise patience until the election process is concluded. This precaution will help prevent costly mistakes and safeguard the interests of all parties,” the Ministry said.
The Ministry thanked the public for their cooperation, noting that the temporary suspension is aimed at ensuring transparency and protecting citizens from potential land-related fraud during the election period.
The election on LCI chairpersons will tale place on July 28, 2026.
