Police in Luwero District have launched investigations into the death of a Senior Four student who allegedly died after being assaulted by a teacher for reportedly failing to comply with school haircut regulations.

The deceased has been identified as Nicholas Nakibinge, 16, a student at New Life Senior Secondary School in Luwero Town Council and a resident of Kiwogoza Village in Luwero District.

The teacher alleged to have assaulted the student, identified as Abraham Mukalazi, is currently on the run.

According to Savannah Regional Police spokesperson Samuel Twineamazima, the incident occurred on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at around 6:00 a.m. on the school premises in Kyesiro Zone.

Twineamazima said preliminary investigations indicate that a group of students had been reported for allegedly failing to trim their hair in accordance with school regulations.

“It is alleged that the suspects assaulted students who had been reported for not having trimmed their hair. One of the suspects, identified as Abraham Mukalazi, who remains at large, allegedly struck the deceased on the chest,” Twineamazima said.

Police say Nakibinge collapsed shortly after the alleged assault and was later pronounced dead.

Authorities were notified and responded to the scene, where statements were recorded from witnesses, parents, and school administrators.

“A case of murder by assault was opened, and the scene was examined and documented as investigations commenced,” Twineamazima added.

Police confirmed that two suspects have been arrested to assist with investigations, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the main suspect.

The body of the deceased was taken to Luwero Hospital for a postmortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.

Twineamazima urged schools across the region to adopt safer and more appropriate disciplinary measures when handling students.

“We appeal to all schools in the region to establish alternative mechanisms for handling disciplinary issues to avoid situations where lives are lost,” he said.

Police said investigations are ongoing and that normal operations at the school have continued as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
