Police in Nateete have arrested a man accused of disguising himself as a female domestic worker to secure employment before allegedly stealing Shs1.7 million from his employers.
The suspect, identified as Rayan Kayaga, allegedly used the name Rukia Namirembe while applying for domestic work, according to preliminary police investigations.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Rachael Kawala said the suspect admitted during interrogation that he had been disguising himself as a woman to secure domestic jobs with the intention of stealing from employers.
“The suspect admitted during interrogation that he had been disguising himself as a female domestic worker with the intention of stealing from employers. This information forms part of the ongoing investigations,” Kawala said.
Police said Kayaga was most recently employed at a home in Mutundwe, Rubaga Division, Kampala, where he is alleged to have stolen Shs1.7 million from his employers.
According to Kawala, the suspect was arrested at a church in Mutundwe after security personnel conducted a routine screening before the start of a church service.
“Following his arrest, the employers reportedly discovered that shs1.7 million was missing from their residence and immediately reported the matter to police,” she said.
Kawala said the suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue and will be arraigned in court once inquiries are complete.
Police have urged members of the public to exercise greater caution when hiring domestic workers by verifying the identity, background and references of prospective employees before offering them employment.
