The Catholic community in Masaka Diocese is mourning the death of Seminarian Mathias Ssali, a fourth-year theology student at St. Paul’s National Major Seminary, Kinyamasika.
Ssali passed away on Thursday evening following a short illness, according to sources familiar with the matter.
He was among the seminarians preparing to be ordained as deacons in August this year under Masaka Diocese, marking a significant milestone in his journey toward the priesthood.
Sources indicate that Ssali fell ill on Sunday and had been undergoing treatment. However, despite medical efforts, he did not recover.
Born in Katimba Parish in Kalungu Sub-county, Masaka Diocese, Ssali was a candidate for major orders and was completing his final year of theology studies at St. Paul’s National Major Seminary.
His death has shocked fellow seminarians, clergy and members of the Catholic faithful, coming just weeks before his anticipated diaconate ordination.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by the diocese and family.
