Police in Mbale have arrested a Senior Three student of Mbale High School in connection with the murder of his schoolmate, 19-year-old Shafik Wasike, who was stabbed to death last month.
The suspect, identified as Kairoki, had been on the run since 28th July, when the fatal incident occurred at Amber Stores in the Indian Quarters.
According to police, the two students reportedly got into a fight on their way home from school. During the altercation, Kairoki allegedly used a sharp object to stab Wasike. The injured teenager was rushed by fellow students to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Elgon Region Police spokesperson, SP Rogers Taitika, confirmed the arrest.
“The suspect had been hiding at Busolwe Town Council in Butaleja District where police picked him from after being tipped off by the community.
The suspect is now in police custody at Mbale City Police and will be paraded before court to answer charges of murder,” he said.
The death of Wasike, a resident of Bujoloto in Nkoma Ward, Mbale City, sparked grief among his peers and family.
He was laid to rest at his ancestral home in Kabwangasi Town Council, amid calls for stricter measures to address violence among school-going youth.
