Police in Kyankwanzi are investigating circumstances under which a woman and her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter were electrocuted at Kikonda B Village, Nsambya Sub County, on the night of Saturday, October 25, 2025.
The victims have been identified as 38-year-old Zawedde Edith and her baby, Abigail Muwanguzi Nalubega.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 11:00 p.m., when the two were found lying lifeless on the floor beside a bed with an electric flat iron between them.
Police and homicide detectives responded swiftly to the scene and opened an inquiry into the suspected electrocution. Preliminary findings indicate that the house where the tragedy occurred had an illegal electricity connection.
Speaking about the incident, Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Kituuma Rusoke, confirmed the deaths and cautioned the public against unsafe electrical practices.
“Preliminary investigations revealed an illegal power connection in the house. We urge the public to always use certified electricians for electrical installations,” ASP Kituuma said.
He added that connecting power illegally or extending electricity to others without authorization is a criminal act that endangers lives.
“Illegally connecting others to the power grid, resulting in such tragic losses, is a serious offence punishable by law,” he emphasized.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to a nearby health facility for postmortem examination as investigations continue.
Since taking over the power distribution role, the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has launched a campaign dubbed “Wetereeze”, aimed at encouraging all customers with illegal electricity connections, tampered, or bypassed meters to voluntarily regularize their power usage.
According to Jonana Kiiza, the Head of Corporate and Stakeholder Affairs at UEDCL, the initiative is a strategic move to promote lawful electricity consumption while protecting the national power infrastructure.
“We are giving an opportunity to customers with tampered meters or illegal supply lines to normalize their connections free of charge. This will help them avoid future penalties or legal consequences,” Kiiza said during the launch of the Wetereeze campaign.
UEDCL has also established a dedicated online platform — https://www.uedcl.co.ug/weterezeeee — where customers can register to legalize their connections.
In addition, assistance is available at all UEDCL offices nationwide and through the company’s toll-free lines: 0800203088, 0800285285, and 0800385385.
