As thousands of pilgrims from across Uganda and beyond trek to Namugongo ahead of the Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations, police have issued a fresh call to all road users to uphold maximum discipline and ensure safety for all.
Michael Kananura, the Traffic Police spokesperson, said the pilgrimage is progressing well so far, with many pilgrims being escorted by security personnel to ensure their safe passage.
He, however, emphasized the need for heightened vigilance and responsibility among motorists.
“We are doing our part, and we urge you to do yours as well,” Kananura said in a statement. “We continue to appeal to all motorists to exhibit the utmost discipline on the road. Please observe all traffic rules to safeguard the lives of the pilgrims and all other road users.”
He added that the police are maintaining a strong presence along major routes leading to Namugongo to manage traffic flow and assist in emergencies.
Kananura warned against reckless driving, overtaking in dangerous spots, and speeding, noting that such actions could endanger the lives of the pilgrims, many of whom are walking long distances.
The annual pilgrimage to Namugongo commemorates the 45 Ugandan Martyrs both Catholics and Anglicans who were executed for their faith in the late 19th century, drawing tens of thousands of believers every June 3rd.
The event poses a significant challenge to road safety, with large groups of foot pilgrims sharing major highways with motor vehicles.
