A police officer has been shot dead by suspected robbers while on patrol in Mukono Municipality .
ASP Emmanuel Bagenda, the officer in charge of Ntaawo Police Post, was fatally shot as he and a colleague tried to intercept suspicious boda bodas linked to a robbery in Kiwala village on Sunday night.
Another police constable was injured in the incident, and the suspects made away with a police firearm.
Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke, while addressing journalists on Monday at the police headquarters in Naguru, confirmed the incident.
“In the night, we registered an incident of a murder of a police officer, ASP Emmanuel Bagenda, the officer in charge of Ntaawo Police Post that is in Mukono Municipality. ASP Emmanuel Bagenda and another police constable received information that there was a robbery that had been registered in Kiwala village, so they responded.”
Kituuma provided details of the attack, explaining how the confrontation unfolded.
“A number of area OCs tried to put up snaps and also to lay well these criminals who were said to be on motorcycles. It was alleged that motorcycles could have been around two. So when ASP Bagenda and his colleague saw a suspicious motorcycle speeding, they tried to intercept it, and in the process, they were shot at. The police constable got injured, but Bagenda was fatally shot, sustaining injuries that led to his demise. In that process, they also took his firearm. The officer, police constable, was taken to hospital by the response force,” he explained.
He noted that the body of the deceased had been taken to the mortuary.
“The remains of ASP Emmanuel Bagenda were conveyed to the mortuary, but we are pursuing the assailants and we hope to get them and bring them to justice once apprehended.”
Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects, who are believed to have fled on motorcycles. The injured constable is receiving treatment at a local hospital.
